ABOUT THE MOVIE

The film is a poetic-performative documentary that delves into Afro-descendant identity, ancestry, self-esteem, and resistance, with Black hair as its symbolic and emotional axis. In interviews conducted by the director herself, 15 Black women of different ages and social, cultural, and economic backgrounds share their stories, while performative scenes enacted by Afro-descendant actors and actresses give form and rhythm to these voices. Filmed in Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis, São Paulo, Salvador, and New York, the film transcends borders, creating a dialogue between memories, geographies, and experiences of distinct African diasporas. SANKOFA is a sensitive mosaic of narratives, images, and performances, where beauty, ancestry, and subjectivity intertwine. With a powerful and lyrical visual language, the work leads viewers on an aesthetic and political journey, revealing collective healing and resistance to historical oppression as paths toward freedom.
